Obituary for Vivian Pettiford Cogwell

Vivan Pettiford Cogwell was born on June 5, 1940 in Granville County, North Carolina to the late Luther “Jack” Pettiford and Virginia Harris Braswell. On August 22 2022, she entered into eternal peace.

At an early age, she joined Union Chapel Baptist Church in Butner, North Carolina. She attended Mary Potter School in Oxford, NC and graduated from G. C. Hawley High in Creedmoor, North Carolina in 1958. Upon graduating, she worked at The Blind Center and Murdoch Center in Butner, North Carolina.

In 1967, she was united in holy matrimony to Thomas Cogwell and to this union, two children were born, Randal Scott and Shannon Lynette.

Upon moving to Durham, NC she joined Northside Baptist Church. She later joined St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church where she served as the Sunday School secretary, as well as a member of the Chancellor, Senior, and Mass choirs.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her younger siblings, Joan, Reginald, and Ronald.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Randal Cogwell of Durham, NC and Shannon Cogwell of Graham, NC; four grandchildren, LaPrecious Cogwell, Shontia Quick, JaKiah Quick and Jakevia Stallworth; three great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Journei, and Sariah; one brother, James Pettiford (Jacqueline) of High Point, NC; three nieces, Crystal, Alexis and Skylar, and one nephew Jahmal; sister-in-law, Laurel Evans Braswell; step-daughter Marybeth Mollo; three great nieces and one great-nephew; special family and friends: Kevin Atkins, Cassandra Harris, Mildred Lyon, Arbilee Jones, Annie Hibbitt, Deric Peaks, and Lathonia Roberts; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
