Obituary for Vernon McCoy Riddick

Vernon McCoy Riddick was born March 2, 1945 to Jessie and Idaluah Riddick in Union, NC as the fifth of eight children. He peacefully passed from labor to reward on Monday, August 1, 2022.

Vernon attended Robert L. Vann Elementary and High School. After High School Vernon elected to serve his country and join the Army in which he was honorably discharged. During Vernon's stint in the service, he received a National Defense Service medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, he was Marksman (rifle M-14), Vietnamese Campaign Medal w/dev 60, Good Conduct Medal (1st Award), 2 O/S bars.

Once Vernon was finished serving his country, he moved to New York where, he was united in holy matrimony to Johnnie Mae Patterson. Through this union, they had five beautiful children: Stephanie Turner of Durham, NC, Cynthia Riddick-Taborn (Teddy) of Durham, NC, Christina Hayden (Kynen) of Long Island, NY, Veronica Williams (Rodney) of Cedar Grove, NC, and Vernon Riddick, Jr. of Durham, NC and a special nephew, Ray Lewis of Durham, NC.

Vernon joined Northside Baptist church in the 1980's and was a faithful, active member.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie & Idaluah Riddick, sister, Mamie Lewis and brother Samuel Curtis Riddick.

He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife, Johnnie Mae Riddick, and his five children, eight grandchildren, Charles, Christopher, Demetris, DeQuan, Martez, Kynen, Jr., Jenai, Nyaysia; twelve great-grans, Ariyanah, Alleiyah, Landin, Charles Jr., Jaylen, Maxwell, Madelyn, Cristian, M'kynleigh, Kynen III, Karis and Kayden. One great-great gran, Naisr.His siblings; Peggy (Ralph) Vann of Ahoskie, NC, Helen (Otho) Gamble of Durham, NC, Jesse (Gwen)Riddick, Durham, NC, Vernell (Julius) Harrell of Durham, NC, Lorraine (Fred) Mizzell of Georgia, one aunt, Cynthia Stokes of Baltimore, MD and a hosts of nieces, nephews and other family members.
