Obituary for Norman Judge "Candy Man" Daye

Mr. Norman Judge Daye, son of the late Willie Daye and Maggie Long Daye was born June 25, 1933. Many knew him and appreciated him in the community as “The Candy Man”. He departed his long wonderful life at Duke Medical Hospital on November 12, 2020.

After a short courtship Norman married the love of his life, Lessie Jones Daye on April 9, 1958. They were married 60 long wonderful years. Norman joined New Red Mountain Baptist Church at a young age and was a faithful member for as long as his health permitted. Norman was a member of Red Mountain Masonic Lodge #468.

He worked for Durham Public Schools for 28 years in the Facilities Department. He was also known as the “The Glass Man”.

Norman was preceded in death by his wife, Lessie Jones Daye; sister, Gracie Daye Scott; 4 sisters-in-law, Dora Yancey(Doris), Georgia Lyons-Thompson, Augusta Daye, Ella J. Cooper; 3 brothers, Bonnie Lee Daye, Eddie Davis Daye and Caleb Daye; brother-in-law, Alfred Jones.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory three brother-In-laws, James Scott, Jr. of Durham, NC; Coy Jones of Durham, NC and Earlie Thomas (Tony) Jones and his wife, Linda of Hillsborough, NC; a host of beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and dear friends; and special family friend Michael Elliott, who was one of his care takers.

A special Thank You to Ms. Gwendolyn Butler who provided compassionate care and gave him special attention over the years after Lessie became ill.
