Obituary for Mattie Ragland "Fats" Thorpe (Ragland)

Mattie Ragland Thorpe, 102, known to all who loved her as “Grandma Fats,”
entered into rest on December 18, 2021 at her home. She was born on February
6, 1919 in Granville County, North Carolina to the late Gabe and Lucy Ragland.
She received her education from Granville County Schools.

On, December 22, 1936, she married the late David Thorpe Sr. Out of the holy
matrimony, they had 10 beautiful kids.

Mattie accepted Christ at an early age in Granville County. Later in life, Mattie
became a member of Union Baptist Church where she served on the kitchen
ministry; inspiring many through her passion for cooking.

Mattie was very known throughout the community and was known for her loving
spirit that embraced everyone. Mattie invited any and every one into her home.
She loved to cook and believed in making sure everyone ate, even if it was just a
“lil taste.” As we all know, her favorite hobby was on Highway 70 (BINGO).

Mattie was preceded in death by her husband David Thorpe, four sons: David
Thorpe II, Larry Thorpe, Alphonza Thorpe, and Elijah Thorpe, eight grandchildren:
Jimmie Lee Thorpe, Donte Peay, Montrellous Thorpe, Lazarren Thorpe, Noricio
Thorpe, Kenneth Holeman, K’von Cook and Tony Williams.

She leaves to celebrate her loving memory: Two sons, John Thorpe-Paulette,
David ( Lil Bay) Thorpe- Jr. Mary, all of Durham. Four daughters, Mattie Mae

Thorpe, Mary Payton, Elizabeth Thornton, all of Durham. Shirley Taylor of New
Jersey. One special niece Peggy Smith and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was blessed to live to see five generations, this is not a given but a gift from
GOD:
30 Grandchildren, 90 Great Grandchildren, 87 Great Great Grandchildren
and 5 Great Great Great Grandchildren.
