Obituary for Mrs. Mary Magalene Wilson

On Sunday September 19, 2021, Mary Magdalene Wilson Brown took flight from a land of sickness and pain to an eternal resting place. Mary was the oldest of eight children born to the late Gladys Reaves Wilson and the late Willie James Wilson. She was born on Christmas Day—December 25, 1945—in Nichols, South Carolina. The family eventually settled in North Carolina.

Mary attended primary school in Marietta (NC) and High School in Fairmont (NC). Mary, her mother, sisters and brother attended the Ebenezer Baptist Church where she was baptized at an early age. As teenager, she relocated to Brooklyn, NY where she resided for many years. In 1977, she was united in holy matrimony to Roosevelt Brown. A very gifted seamstress, she worked in the sewing industry. In 1989, Mary returned to Marietta, where she lived until 2020 when her extensive health care needs brought her to Durham.

An extrovert, Mary was very talkative, loved people and enjoyed eating good food. Her favorite pastimes were growing flowers and caring for her cats.

Left to cherish Mary’s life and memories are her four loving sisters: Marie Wilson of Brooklyn, NY; Mamie Louise Walls and Veronica Wilson of Baltimore, Maryland; and Peggy Wilson-Stephens, Durham, North Carolina; one sister-in-law, Barbara J. Wilson; two brothers-in-law, Garnet Walls and Charles Wallace; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by her three siblings: Lena Bell Wilson Stephens, Betty Wilson Wallace and Randy Ray Wilson.
