Obituary for Mary Joe Pullin (Rives)

Mrs. Mary Joe Pullin, devoted daughter, loving mother and
loyal friend to many died Monday, March 4, 2019. A native of
Durham, North Carolina, Mary Joe was preceded in death by her
mother Fannie Rives, and her brother John Lee Rives.

Mary Joe was born on November 28, 1931. She attended Durham Public Schools. For over 20 years Mary Joe worked for Duke Hospital in the Radiology Department, until her retirement. Her compassion for
people and love of God was evident in life as an
active member and usher of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.

Never one to sit idle, Mary Joe loved to be on the go
and socialize. Long after she stopped driving Mary Joe could be seen walking all over her beloved Old North Durham, where she was born and raised checking-in on friends and sitting on her porch. Fiercely independent she took care of all her affairs unto the very end. Over the years, many at Thanksgiving dinners and countless gatherings of her family could count on her baking a wonderful pound cake for the occasion. She loved to shop for beautiful clothes and for many years would sew her own. No one more than Mary Joe could share in a good laugh and a funny story. She was known for her wit and expressing her true feelings on any subject. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish memories are her daughter Cynthia Pullin; son Andrew Pullin, both of Durham, NC; sisters Frances Hayes and Ann Lee Rives both of Durham, NC; grandchildren Krystal, Demario, Courtney and Tehron Farrington all of Durham, NC; nieces; Sharen Lewis (Danny) of Hillsborough; Karen Hayes-Raymond (Herold); Felicia Hayes both of Durham, NC; Beverly Hayes(Michael)Poole of Taylorsville, NC; nephews Michael Hayes, of West Chester, OH; Stephen Hayes of Durham, NC. and a host of great grandchildren, cousins, relatives and friends.

The family wishes to acknowledge special friends Lesie Rogers, Peggy and Jaycee Moore. A special ”Thank You!” to cousin and dear friend George Reeves.

The Pullin family wishes to acknowledge with our deepest
appreciation the many expressions of love, concern and
kindness shown to us during this time of bereavement. You
have lifted our hearts with prayers, love and your caring ways.
We thank you and may God bless each and every one of you.
