Obituary for Luetta "Sis" Leggett (Walker)

Luetta Walker (Sis) Leggett went to be with her Lord on Friday, February 7, 2020. She was born on June 27, 1924 in Rockingham, NC to Tom and Minnie Dove Walker. From an early age Luetta was raised in Durham, NC. After the death of her mother, her father re-married and she was reared by her father and stepmother Evangelist Mary Bennet Walker Taylor. Ten years ago, Luetta relocated to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law. She was a resident of Summerstone Health & Rehab Center in Kernersville, NC.

“Sis” as most of her family and close friends called her, received her nickname from her brother, the late Elder Robert L. Walker. Luetta graduated from Hillside High School with the class of 1944. She was the proud wife of Robert Lee Leggett for 44 years. Luetta and Robert were the parents of one son. However, Luetta also had many “play daughters.”

“Sis” was a kind and friendly lady; she loved little children, her pet dogs and word find puzzles. Luetta retired from Durham Regional Hospital in 1986 after 30 years of service as a hospital laundry worker. Sis grew up in the United Holy Church of America, first as a member of Bethel Tabernacle United Holy Church and later in life, until her health failed, she was a devoted member of New Covenant United Holy Church. Over the years Luetta served as an Usher, Sunday School Secretary, Church Secretary and a Church Mother.

Luetta was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother. She was also preceded by a beloved brother-in-law, Buster and his wife, Katherine; a dear friend and sister-in-law, Ethel Walker and a highly valued ‘sister-cousin,’ Rosa Lee James. She leaves to mourn her loss a son, Warren (Lois) of Lewisville, NC; two grandsons, Diarra Ambe (Elizabeth) of Greensboro, NC and Omari Pili of Atlanta, GA and one great-grandson, Ivan Ulysses of Greensboro, NC. She also leaves to mourn her loss a valued sister-in-law, Elder Phyllis Walker and niece, Brandi Walker, along with double first cousins, Thomas (Carolyn) and Clint (Joyce) Walker and first cousin, Louise Rand. In addition, she leaves behind her beloved church family as well as other relatives and friends.
