Obituary for Mrs. Juanita Campbell Page

Juanita Campbell Page was the first of six children born to Ed and Pearlie Little Campbell. She was born July 17, 1923, in Chesterfield, South Carolina. Predeceased by her parents and all but one sibling, she departed this life on April 30, 2022, after a brief illness.

All of the living siblings moved away from Chesterfield, SC, though their relationship to their family home and the community endured over the years. Juanita was the first to leave for Durham, NC in search of work. She took a job in a dry-cleaning establishment and lived with her uncle. She met and fell in love with Burly Randolph Page who came from a well-established Black family in Durham. They married during the height of World War II. Burly enlisted in the Army and was sent to Tuskegee, Alabama to train in the program for Black airmen. Following military service Juanita and Burly started their family, which grew to include two daughters and two sons. Juanita instilled in her children by way of living example the values and qualities of love, faith, compassion, perseverance, hope, prudence, and fairness. She compensated for her basic formal education by providing her children with spiritual teachings and strong faith in order to protect the integrity of the family and keep it together through very difficult conditions.

Juanita attended Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Durham, where she was a devoted member for over 50 years. She was recently honored there for her longtime membership and for being a matriarch of the church community. Juanita and Burly were strong proponents of the Black ethos, "advancement through education". While their respective family conditions and the segregated school systems in America did not prepare them for higher education, education would be a priority for their children. Each of their children were honor graduates from high school. They also graduated with high honors from undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools. Juanita was preceded in death by her husband and both daughters, Sandra Jean Page Vickers (Leroy) and Daphne Diane Page-Aaron. Here to cherish her precious memories are both sons, Burly Randolph Page, Jr. and Carlos Jan Page, her sister Carolyn C. Vannorden, and many loving relatives and friends.

I come to the garden alone,
While the dew is still on the roses;
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear,
The Son of God discloses.

He speaks, and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing;
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.

I'd stay in the garden with Him
Tho' the night around me be falling;
But He bids me go; thro' the voice of woe,
His voice to me is calling.

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own,
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.
