Obituary for Johnnie Anna Lyons
Mrs. Johnnie Anna Lyons was born in Farrell, Pennsylvania to the late James and Beatrice Thomas.
On Friday, February 8, 2019, she peacefully transitioned home to be with the Lord.
She attended and graduated from Farrell Area Schools and attended Howard University for a brief time. She later continued her education attending evening classes and earning an associate Degree in bookkeeping. She became employed at the Mercer County Courthouse Controller’s Office where she remained for 26 years as a Payroll Clerk until she retired.
In 1953, she married the late Bennie William Lyons and from that union they were blessed with three daughters. She was a life long member of Second Missionary Baptist Church where she served as the financial secretary and Deaconess. She was also a member of the senior choir, the Missionary Circle, and the Nurses Guild.
In 1996, she joined her daughter in Durham and became a member of Union Baptist Church. Without skipping a beat, she became active in the Food Service Ministry, the Adult Missionary Circle, Stephen Ministry, and served as a Deaconess until her health declined.
Johnnie loved to cook and bake. In Farrell she was famous for her pound cakes, parker house rolls and Christmas cookies. She also had a passion for sewing and crocheting. She made many beautiful garments, baby blankets, and afghans.
In Addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Bennie William Lyons, her stepson, Bennie Edward Lyons and a brother, Joseph Thomas.
She leaves to cherish her memories her three daughters, Betty A. Lyons; Arlene Lyons Daniels (Ronald), Beatrice R. Lyons, Vanessa Woodard, whom she loved and considered as a daughter; one daughter-in-Law, Theresa Lyons; two granddaughters Veronica Stone (Gerald), Kia McCauley; one grandson, Darryl Lyons; two great granddaughters, Kimberly Henderson and Angela Polonchuk (Ilya); one great grandson, Caleb Henderson. She also leaves to cherish memories her godson William Bloodsaw; her special grandchildren and great grandchildren who lovingly called her “Grammy L” – Seanyea and Tahvyea Rains, Quinten Jones (Patricia), Sean Rains, David Jones, Miles and Ivy Brooke Rains and a host of relatives and friends.
