Obituary for Mrs. Jacqueline Parker Hicks

Jacqueline Parker Hicks
Mrs. Jacqueline P. Hicks was born on August 31, 1945, in Durham, North Carolina. She was the youngest child of the late Victor Parker, Sr. and Catherine Bullock Parker. Mrs. Hicks departed this life on Sunday, June 6, 2021.
Affectionately known as “Jackie or JP,” her faith journey started as a member of New Red Mountain Baptist Church as a youth. She was a member of the Youth Ministry, Youth Choir and participated in her local Girl Scout troop. She relocated to Syracuse, New York, in 1973 with her husband Donald Hicks, Jr. and their three children. She became a member of Tucker Missionary Church, where she served as a Trustee, member of the Repass Committee, and was instrumental with Youth Ministry.
Jacqueline’s formal education was completed at Hillside High School in Durham, North Carolina. She furthered her education at Winston Salem State University, where she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. While in Syracuse, Jackie attended Syracuse University and received her Master of Science in Nursing. Jackie served the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) in Syracuse as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Department of Psychiatry. Jackie later retired from the VAMC after realizing she had accomplished all her goals. She then turned her attention to caring for her ailing husband and continued to volunteer/mentor at Onondaga County Department of Aging.
She was a valued community member serving in many different organizations. She volunteered with the Central New York Girls Scouts as a troop leader and became the president of the Central New York Council of Girls Scouts. She was a founding member of the Syracuse Area Black Nurses Association. She served as a liaison for nursing schools in the Central New York area to retain and recruit black nurses and nursing students. During her time at Winston Salem State, she was initiated in 1965 into the Gamma Phi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated. She was a member of the Syracuse Alumnae Chapter, where she served on several committees and was a Delta Dear. She was also honored for diligently serving the sorority for over 50 years. Jackie was recognized for her work in the community as a recipient of the Harriet Tubman Freedom Award and the Marjorie Dowdell Fortitude Award.
Jackie loved to cook, bake, decorate, and sew! She enjoyed shopping and spending time with her “Good Girlfriends” and family. She was known for hosting brunch every Christmas, and her home was always open to family and friends. She loved supporting local art initiatives like Syracuse Stage and Homecoming events at Winston Salem State, along with her classmates. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Jacqueline Parker Hicks was predeceased by the love of her life, Donnell Hicks, Jr., her parents, and her older brother Victor Parker, II. She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy: three children Carlus (Jacquelyn) of Chester, Virginia, Alton (Tanya) of Syracuse, New York, and Chanda (Adriane) of Charlotte, North Carolina; godson Jimmy Oliver of Syracuse; goddaughter/mentee Franchesca Jean of New York, New York; one brother in love Dwight (Joann) of Syracuse, NY, sisters in love Mary (Lois) Parker of Durham, North Carolina, Constantine Hicks-Evans of Tallahassee, Florida, Vivan (John) Hanson of Erial, New Jersey, Carolyn Hicks-Tyson also of Erial, New Jersey; grandchildren; Corey, Aaron, Austin, Sarai, and Kellen; the “Good Girlfriends” Doris Black, Verona Edmond, Virginia Adams, Denise Johnson, etc. and a host of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you help support the causes that meant most to Jackie, which were the uplift of young women through education. Donations should be made to the Mr. and Mrs. Donnell Hicks Scholarship Fund via the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Chi Pi Chapter. Donations will be allocated for scholarships to Delta Sigma Theta and Winston Salem State University.
