Obituary for Esthus Amos Jr.

The angels have visited us again and have taken our dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and mentor. Esthus Amos, Jr., passed away peacefully in his sleep and he has gone to be with the Lord. He will truly be missed, but he will forever remain in our hearts.

Esthus was born in Jackson, Mississippi on December 10, 1945, to the late Esthus Amos, Sr. and the late Inez Amos. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Mary White and his brother, Charles (Beverly) Amos.

Esthus received his primary and secondary education in the Hinds County Public School System, graduating from Jim Hill High School in 1962. He attended Tougaloo College before earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Tuskegee Institute in 1968. He married Verdell (Bascomb) Amos on January 28, 1967, in Tuskegee, Alabama and he was a devoted and loving husband to her for 56 years. Esthus went to work for IBM immediately after graduating from Tuskegee and remained there for more than 42 years. During his illustrious career, he worked in Detroit, MI, Dayton, OH, Lexington, KY, Austin, TX, Charlotte, NC, and he finished his career and lived out his final years in Cary, NC.

At an early age, Esthus accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. Throughout his life, he had an unwavering commitment to and love for the Lord. He served as a dedicated member of several church congregations, including David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church (Austin, TX), Little Rock A.M.E Zion Church (Charlotte, NC) and St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church (Durham, NC), where he served as the Chairman of the Trustee Board, a Class Leader, and a member of the Men’s Choir.

Esthus was a deeply committed man. As a teen, he was a member of the youth wing of the Jackson NAACP and worked directly under the leadership of Medgar Evers. At the height of the Civil Rights Movement, Esthus participated in mass meetings and voter registration efforts, helped organize an NAACP youth choir, and participated in sit ins in and around Jackson. Esthus was a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. He loved sports, travel, music, long Sunday drives and our dog, Jeff. Esthus could occasionally be found in the kitchen preparing his famed chocolate malts, bourbon balls, or Hungarian goulash.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, friend, and mentor to many. Esthus was a wise, kind, and gentle-spirted man who believed that everyone, especially his children, should get and keep a job. He had a sharp wit and a great sense of humor, and he loved God with all his heart. He was dedicated to raising his family to do the same. Esthus was a Godly man with a huge heart and a humble spirit.

Esthus received his crown of glory on February 18, 2023.
