Elizabeth Lewis Clanton “Liz”, 70 of Durham, NC was born August 23, 1951 in Tarboro, NC to the late Frank Lewis Sr. and Christine Jones Lewis. Elizabeth was the third of four children. She departed this Life on April 12, 2022. Elizabeth was educated in Tarboro, North Carolina, Edgecombe Public School System where she received her high school diploma from Pattillo High School in 1969. Elizabeth continued her studies at North Agricultural Technical State University, Greensboro, NC receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education. As an educator, she was employed by Durham Public Schools. As her passion grew to educate and nurture our youth, she returned back to school to obtain her Master’s Degree in Elementary School Counseling from North Carolina Central University. She also, earned her National Certification in school counseling. Elizabeth was a proudly devoted Educator in Durham NC for 30 years.
Elizabeth loved being a mother to her twins Odell and Marian, and adores her grandchildren Noah Harper Clanton and Mariah Nicole Parker. She instilled in them at an early age to trust GOD and to be obedient to his word. She attended worship services at Union Baptist Church in Tarboro NC with her parents and siblings. When she moved to Durham in 1978 with her family, Elizabeth became an active member of Community Baptist Church and provided leadership for the Junior Usher board. But, it was Mt. Level Missionary Baptist Church where she found her home to worship and serve the Lord until her death. Elizabeth hands were blessed with many talents: sewing, cooking, gardening, drawing and painting. She had a sense humor and personality that could soothe the soul. In addition to her contributions in education, she was an active member of the Durham Retired School Personnel, and North Carolina Agricultural Technical State University Durham Alumni Chapter.
She is survived by her daughter Marian Clanton Black, grandson Noah Harper Clanton, granddaughter Mariah Nicole Parker, brother Frank Lewis Jr., niece Christy Lloyd Taylor, niece Tracy Lloyd McCurty (Edward), nephew Bryan Douglass Lloyd, niece Jersan Carter Ward (Jimmy), nephew Frank Lewis III (Natasha), nephew Johnny Carter Jr., nephew Christopher Lewis, and nephew Mason Lewis, great nieces: Kyrah, Zuri, London, Sydney and great nephews: Anthony Jr., Jimmy Jr Jalen, and Tourmani, along with a host of additional family and friends
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her son Odell D. Clanton III, two sisters Faye Lloyd, and Susan Carter.
