Obituary for Ms. Earnestine Hicks

Mrs. Earnestine Gaddy Hicks was born on January 16, 1928 in Durham, NC to the late Duncan and Ellie Gore Gaddy she departed this earthly life and went to be with the Lord on April 28, 2022 at her home.

She attended Durham Public Schools. Being the oldest of 5 girls she had to leave school to help support her family. She later pursued her education and earned her General Education Diploma then continued at Durham Technical Community College, Durham, NC earning a Licensed Practical Nurse Degree.

She worked as an LPN at Lincoln, Watts and Duke Hospitals in Durham, NC until her retirement.
Earnestine was a member of Saint John's Baptist Church Durham, NC and upon moving to Rougemont, NC she joined Glenns Grove Missionary Baptist church where she was a faithful member for over 50 years. She loved her church and was very active as long as her health permitted. She served as President of the Deaconess Board, member of the Missionary Circle and member of the Kitchen committee. She was also a Field Worker for the
New Home and Durham Baptist Association.

In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing crocheting knitting and reading her favorite book Powers of the Psalms she also loved hats and had a huge collection Beautiful Sunday hats with suits to match. Earnestine was a faithful and true woman of God who had an infectious smile she touched everyone she met. With her kind generosity she opened her home to many children whom she nurtured and guided with love, kindness love and encouraging words of wisdom she will be truly missed by all she touched.

Earnestine was preceded in death by her parents; husband of over 63 years, Edward (Ed) Hicks,Sr.; son, Edward "Bobo" Hicks, Jr.; sisters, Elouise Hardy, Katherine Gaddy, Bobbie Johnson and Violamae Alston; and grandson, Kevin
Hicks.

Ernestine leaves to cherish fond memories her loving and devoted daughter, Edarion Hicks (Dwight) Toomer and son, Glenn Hicks (Guadalupe) Hicks both of Rougemont, NC; one sister, Olivia (Edward) Wells of Elizabeth, NJ, grandchildren, Tyrone, Juritza, Tiara and Ashley;
great grandchildren, Jermery, Jermishia, Tyrone, Jr. Vtyia, Emanuel, Syx, Jairan, Lorraine Gabriel Zana and Jordan and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
