Obituary for Diane Kessler (Thompson)

Diane Thompson Kessler, of Durham, NC passed away peacefully at home on Monday August 8, 2022, at the age of 81. Diane was a native of Statesville, NC and the daughter of late Bernice and Charles Thompson. She graduated with a B.A. in English from Pfeiffer College in 1962. She continued her graduate school education at University of Tennessee and Winthrop University. While at Winthrop she married Ridley R. Kessler Jr., from Hendersonville, NC. Diane was preceded in death by her husband Ridley Kessler. She is survived by her daughter Melissa M. Kessler of Durham, NC.

Diane worked in the Durham Public School System as a librarian for over 18 years. By the time she retired, Diane was the Media Coordinator for the entire Durham Public School System. As Media Coordinator she was responsible for helping all of Durham Public School’s libraries transition from paper to electronic databases.

One of Diane’s passion was her love of West Highland White Terriers. She was a long time member of the Durham Kennel Club where she had served in various capacities and had spent many hours at dog shows. She was an avid member of her book club where she enjoyed looking for new books for members to read. Lastly, she was a committed member of the Episcopal Church. She felt it was important to give back to the church; therefore, she became a member of the Altar Guild of the Chapel of the Cross where she served faithfully for many years.

A memorial service will be held at the Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill, NC at 2:30 p.m. Thursday August, 17, 2022. Her ashes will be interred at a later date in Hendersonville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Diane’s name to the Altar Guild of the Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill, NC.
