Obituary for Claude Lee Glenn
Claude Lee Glenn (age 97) was the eighth of Luscious S. and Mary H. McMannen Glenn’s nine children. He entered the world with his younger, twin brother Clarence Lovell on August 24, 1922 in Rougemont, North Carolina. The newborns weighed less than 5 pounds collectively. Nevertheless, they grew and thrived alongside their siblings. Claude attended Rougemont School and Little River School in Bahama, North Carolina – prior to enlisting in the United States Army as a young man. He served in the Pacific during World War II: he was stationed in Hiroshima, Nagasaki, the Philippines, and Okinawa during his time as a Heavy Machine Gunner. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal for his service.
He returned to Rougemont after the war to start a new vocation and, ultimately, to start a family of his own. He and Clara Mae Jones of Bahama, North Carolina were united in Holy Matrimony on February 6, 1954. Two children were born of this union: Kobie Wright of Detroit, MI and Cynthia Kolette of the home.
Claude was a farmer for over 70 years. He was actively involved in the Durham County Agricultural Community and served on both County and District committees. He also served as a surveyor’s assistant with J. Watts Copley Land Surveyors. A passionate outdoorsman with extensive knowledge about agriculture, forestry, and conservation, Claude was known to share information with friends, family, and other agriculturalists alike.
The one thing that he loved more than nature and the land was his family. He spent much of his free time sitting in the shade under the oak trees at his home, telling stories to his granddaughters, squabbling with his wife, and cracking jokes with his siblings, nephews, and nieces. He was an avid supporter of the Glenn-McMannen family reunion and looked forward to the fourth weekend in July (when the reunion is traditionally held) each year. Claude was preceded in death by his father and mother along with siblings Edward, Roumania, Ossilean, Dovie, Annie, Alma, and George. He is survived by Clara, his wife of 66 years; his twin brother Clarence; son Kobie; daughter Cynthia; grandchildren Diana, Alexis, Gabrielle, Victoria, and Koby; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
