Obituary for Bessie Mae Suitt (Cozart)

Bessie Mae Cozart Suitt, affectionately known as “Ma Bessie”, was born on July 27, 1936, to the late Pender Cozart and the late Minnie Lee Harris Cozart. Bessie was called home for eternal rest early on June 26th, 2022.

Bessie was educated in Granville County Schools. At an early age, Bessie became a member of Talley Ho Baptist Church. Later, she became a member of Emmanuel AME Church where she remained a faithful member.

On July 17, 1954, she united in Holy Matrimony with the late John Lee Suitt Sr. To this union, five children were born.

For over 33 years, Bessie worked in the Dietary Department of UNC Memorial Hospital until she retired. She had a heart of gold and was loved by everyone who came in contact with her. He cooking skills were unmatched, but her style of dress was impeccable.

She held a strong belief in family and love. The principles she instilled into her children and grandchildren were built around loving and protecting each other.
She would often say “There is nothing in this world that I wouldn’t do for my family because you are all MINE.”

In 2013, Bessie was proceeded in death by her oldest daughter Edith Suitt Allen.

Ma Bessie leaves his legacy to be cherished by her children: Sandra Suitt, Daryl Suitt, Kathy Yates, and John Lee Suitt Jr., All of Durham, NC. Ten grandchildren: Crystal, Monica, April (William), Reginald (Bheeraw), Andre, Ashley, Eric, Terrence, Ryan, and Lindsay. And 10 great-grandchildren: Taniyah, Ashtin, Bryson, O’Montay, Nevaeh, Aubrey, Christian, Nariah, Cain, and Reginald Jr. Ma Bessie also leaves a host of loved ones, cousins, family, and friends.
