Obituary for Minister Alice Walker Cheek

Alice Cheek age 64, died on July 15, 2022 at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. Minister Alice Cheek was born September 1, 1957 in Durham, North Carolina to the late Ida Mae Walker and James Johnson. She received her education from Hillside High School and she obtained a Culinary Degree from an online college. She had a lasting career at Classic Food service where she later retired. She married Isaac Cheek on February 19, 2000 and happily spent her last twenty-two years of life with him.

Minister Cheek was known for her delicious desserts, her faith in God and her passion for serving her community. She provided many outlets of support for domestic violence victims and she advocated for crime prevention in District Five. She worked closely with missionaries in the area to support families in need.

Minister Cheek was acknowledged and awarded the Community Service medal by the Mayor of Durham and the Durham Chief of Police for her acts of kindness within the community; she was also presented with a bench in Edgemont Park by the City of Durham. She led and coordinated National Night Out in District 5, she acted as head facilitator for the district helping bring awareness to challenges the community faced and coordinated with different departments to aid in servicing the Edgemont Community. She also coordinated summer programs for the youth in the community at the local ministry (Refiner’s Fire Community Center). Minister Cheek has endless amounts of accolades, this is why everyone found comfort in her, giving her the title of ”Neighborhood Mom.”

She is survived by her husband, Issac Cheek of the home; four children, Shanetta Walker, Shantae Walker both of Durham, NC, Robert (Shanika) Lyons of Whitsett, NC and Micheal Washington of Edgewood, MD; eight siblings, Thurman Walker, Rudolph “June” Arnette, Torrell (Artris) Arnette, Torrence and (Lolihada) Arnette, Sonia (Todd) McCauley, Lisa Arnette, Ruby and (Redonnie) Thomas Durham, NC, and Iris Arnette all of Durham, NC ; fifteen grandchildren, Shakari, Armani, Jadikus, Schokia, Garland, Tyriek, Antwain, Shaliah, Shawn, Reign, Kéyvon, Diyshawn, DaMichael, Jaqouri, Michael Jr. and two great grandchildren, Aiden, and Mason.a lifelong friend, Rosa Benjamin as she would refer to lovely as “Sista”, and a host of family members and friends who she dearly cherished.
