Alice Mae Jones, daughter of the late Jesse Mercer and Ida Owens Mercer, was born
September 7,1925 in Durham, North Carolina and departed this life on December 10, 2018.
Alice attended East End Elementary School and Hillside High School and was a member of the
class of 1944. She was an Advanced Licensed Practical Nurse at Duke Medical Center for 32
years, where she was viewed as one of the many Pioneers for African Americans in this field.
On December 17, 1945, Alice was united in Holy Matrimony to Clarence Jones. To this union
their only child, Sandra Yvonne was born.
At an early age, Alice joined Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, and later moved her membership to
Union Baptist Church where she served faithfully until she and Clarence were re-Iocated to
New Jersey. During her husband's tenure as Chair of the Deacon Board, Alice was dedicated to
supporting him while maintaining the epitome of a Golden Godly woman. She was also
instrumental in leading the Deaconess and Church Ministries in her own gracious and humble
manner.
Among the many activities Alice enjoyed was traveling. Whether it was to Stone Mountain,
Georgia, cruising to Mexico, seeing a Broadway Play, attending church conferences and
conventions, shopping with friends, or taking in several amusement parks with her
grandchildren, these are what brought great joy to her. She also enjoyed welcoming her
extended family to her home with open arms and preparing home cooked meals, especially on
Sundays after church.
Alice had one brother, Richard (Bud) Mercer, Sr. and nephews, Jimmie Mercer, Sr. and Richard (Dad) Mercer, Jr. who preceded her in death.
Those who will cherish her loving memory are her husband, Clarence; her daughter, Sandra J.
