Lillian Martin Walston

Lillian Martin Walston, age 102, passed away at the home of her daughter on June 6, 2013. She was born October 17, 1910 in Seaboard, NC, one of six children born to the late Peter Quimby and Lillian Coates Martin. She attended NC College for Negroes (now NC Central University) and was married to the late Nehemiah P. Walston.

She worked in the Radiology Department at Duke University Medical Center until her retirement in 1975. Lillian’s passions were baking, reading, traveling, and teaching and mentoring children. After she retired, she volunteered as a tutor for 10 years at Fayetteville Street School in Durham. She was a faithful member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church for 70 plus years and was designated a “Mother of the Church”. She retained her keen mind and love of people throughout her life.

Surviving are her daughter, Evelyn W. Hicks and husband Lee, her son Martin Walston and wife Elizabeth, all of Durham, stepdaughter Cleo L. Walston of Salisbury, MD, grandson Martin Q. Walston and wife Marlo of Durham, granddaughters Martina E. Hicks of Raleigh and Leticia Melvin of Newburgh, NY. Also surviving are her most cherished nieces and nephews; Lillian A. Shearin (Melvin), Marshall Avent (Jacqueline) of Richmond, VA, Margaret Hayman (James) of Clinton, MD, Marie Carter (Norman) of Ft. Washington, MD, Jean A. Greene of Salisbury, MD, Garland Avent (Maggie) of Wake Forest, NC, their families and numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 11th at 1:00 pm at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, 404 Dowd Street, Durham, NC. Reverend David R. Mitchell will officiate and the family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.
